House Hunting Holidays in Tobago
The Caribbean island of Tobago is the diminutive neighbour of Trinidad,
the two islands comprising the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Tobago,
a compact 300 square kilometres, enjoys a tropical Caribbean climate
of two seasons, a dry season from January to May, and a wet season beginning
in June and usually ending some time in December. If you’re looking
for a property purchase in this attractive Caribbean climate, a house
hunting holiday is the perfect way to take a leisurely look at the lie
of the land. What follows here is some background information…
History
The original denizens of Tobago were the Arawaks, who were later supplanted
by the Kalinago, or Island Carib people. These settlers, who arrived
from South America, lent their name to what are now known as the Caribbean
Islands. Tobago was visited by the British in 1580, who were probably
the first Europeans to set foot on the island. Later settled by the
Dutch in 1654, Tobago was eventually claimed by the British in 1815,
The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago becoming a British Crown Colony
in 1889. An independent member of the Commonwealth from 1962, the Republic
of Trinidad and Tobago was created in 1976.
Attractions
The Crown Port International Airport is situated in the south east of
the island, where large beach strips provide the opportunity for both
the traditional beach holiday and watersports. Apart from the more conventional
pursuits associated with a Carribean holiday, the unspoilt nature of
the rainforest in the north and centre of the main Island of Tobago
- which is protected - is an increasingly popular destination for those
interested in ecotourism. The island of Little Tobago, to the North
East of Tobago proper, is also noted as an unspoilt area of exceptional
beauty.
The conventional holiday resort developments of the island are situated
in the southwest, around the large beach areas of Buccoo Reef, Store
Bay, Crown Point and Pigeon Point. Tobago boasts many pristine beaches,
notably at Englishman’s Bay, Castara, and Bloody Bay.
