In the area of eastern Peloponnese lie three significant historical centres which are easily accessible from the sea. Mycenae at the head of the Argolic Gulf was the centre of the Mycenaean period, which succeeded the Minoans and provided the material for Homer's epics. In the same areathere are the well preserved ruins of the ancient city of Olympia, sacred place of the ancient Greeks and also the place where the Olympic Games of Antiquity were once held.
