Lisbon

Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon is a sophisticated metropolis. Although the country’s economy has at times struggled to cope with the influx of colonials of these so-called ritornados has added much to the excitement and colour of contemporary Lisbon life. The seven hills on which the city is built are easily negotiated using the old trams or funicular railways that work the streets. Although much of the original city was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake, the warren-like Alfama, the old combines both traditional and modern ways of life. Similarly, the Baixa district has nostalgic street names dedicated to different trades, though today’s reality is a busy district humming with shops, restaurants and banks.

The city is only a half hour train ride from the resort towns of Cascais and Estoril, which have been attracting tourists since the 19th century. No longer a sleepy fishing village, Cascais has a charming old town, where there’s still a fabulous fish market, with twisting cobbled streets that you can explore away from the crowds. The casino and the golf courses are Estoril’s main resort attractions. Other towns and villages around Lisbon are also worth exploring. These include Sintra, well known for its 14th century palace, Setubal with its wonderful beaches and fish restaurants and the fishing village of Seimbra at the edge of the Parque Natural da Arrabida.
