Another area worth looking at is the Green Coast surrounding Porto in the far North of the country. Porto, the home of the fortified wine, is a wealthy area and one which has a few decent beaches as well.

Prices in the north are considerably cheaper than on the Algarve, and less expensive too than on the Silver Coast, although there isn’t the range of volume of new-build properties available. Instead, a rural farmhouse in need of TLC can be picked up for £25,000 plus, while a two-bedroom apartment centrally located in Porto, for example, will set you back €200,000 (£140,000) or more.
