Silver Coast property

If Lisbon yearns for its glorious 17th century past a little too longingly at times, the resorts of Estoril and Cascais, 20 minutes along the coast, are forward-looking by contrast. Playing second home to the city’s rich and privileged, the beachfront, palm tree-lined resorts exude a quiet confidence and affluence, a feeling underlined by the country’s largest casino being located in Estoril.

Wealth unsurpassed in the guise of stupendous 18th century property is a feature of Sintra, a fairytale like mountain top village situated 30 minutes’ drive from Lisbon. A bolthole for the elite who fled Lisbon following a huge earthquake in 1755 that devastated the city, today it is a must-see destination. Unrepresentative of the region in general, it is nonetheless a sight to behold if only as a day visitor. Those tempted sufficiently by Oeste’s attractions to want to buy a little piece for themselves should look to a Lisbon pied-a-terre (prices from £50,000), a country retreat (one is need of renovation can be had for £40,000), or to a new property on one of several contemporary developments – CampoReal, Prai D’el Rey and Born Sucesso – under construction in the area, where prices are from £165,000.

The Silver Coast (Lisbon coast) has been attracting more tourists in recent years and has therefore become something of a hotspot among international property speculators.
