Javea

In 1969 Edmundo Ros, the UK’s most popular Latin American band leader from the 40s to the late 60s, bought El Escondito (The Hideaway) in the small fishing village of Javea, from an English woman who had earned the sobriquet La Madrina de Jacea (the Godmother of Jacea) for her high spending ways in the local bars – a profligacy which eventually came to the ears of the wices of the town and who threatened their husbands with dire consequences if she wasn’t ostracised. Edmundo arrived on the scene just as the lady was on her way out and bought the house that has been home for himself and his wife Susan from the time of his retirement. Javea is still a fishing port, but no longer small, and with 52% of the resident population being non-Spanish the antics of a lone English woman no longer cause comment.

Javea may have grown far beyond the expectations of either the Madrina or Edmundo, but the town still pulls at the heartstrings of many a Brit, either for holidays or as a place to settle and buy Javea property. The town is almost three; El Arenal, the sweep of beach to the sough where most of the visitor accommodation is location, the Port, the still very busy fishing harbour with its water-front bars and restaurants, and the Old Town, mainly populated by the Spanish and where most of the historic part of the town can be found, including the newly restored Mercado Municipal. Together they offer a well-rounded location for a holiday or permanent home.
