Galicia
The arrival of low cost airlines to Northern Spain has resulted in a 50% increase in visitors to Galicia. This region of the northwest has always been popular with the Spanish and indeed the Gallegos themselves. Like in many parts of Spain, people didn’t travel much outside the borders of their own region until fairly recently. And when you see the beauty of Galicia, you cannot help thinking that they may have been right.
A drive along the coast here shows a succession of beautiful rias, or inlets, surrounded by steep green forests with cut coves and superb sandy beaches. Deep blue estuaries, often likened to fjords, make this part of Spain so distinctive and the seafood that comes from these inlets where fresh water meets salt, is celebrated by foodies throughout the world.
