Varna - About the Area

Balchik is a town and seaside resort, situated terrace-like on a small bay on the Black Sea, 31km North of Varna, 37km south-east of Dobrich and 500km East from Sofia and only 3km from one of the most famous Bulgarian resorts, Albena. The town has many historic and natural attractions, narrow beach strips, hotels and camping grounds.

Byala is situated 60km from Varna and 7km from Staro Oryahovo. South of this, the last wooded foothills of the Balkan range descend to meet a six kilometre long beach backed by the Luna, Prostor and Slantse campsites. Known to the Greeks as Heliopolis, or City of the Sun, the town's heyday came in the Roman period, when, under the name of Navlohos, it became a fortified trading settlement. The broken columns of the Temple of Jupiter can still be seen in the large park to the left of Obzor's main square, but its principal asset nowadays is the beach to the north. Obzor is popular with Bulgarians and East Europeans, and is well served with family-run cafes and restaurants.

Bourgas is a district town situated near the Bay of Bourgas on the Black Sea coast, 390km east of Sofia, a seaside resort. Bourgas is a starting point for the resort complexes Slunchev Bryag, Dyuni, Eleni and the towns and villages along the South Black Sea coast. It is a comparatively new settlement, founded by fishermen and the sand on the town beach is typically black due to iron and titanium content.

Karlovo is located in the Stara Planina mountains with an altitude of 260m and a population of 27,681. It is famous for its nature, fresh air and pure mountain water and also as the home of Bulgarian rose oil. The town still keeps its Bulgarian traditions and spirit, combined with the modern life.

Varna lies on the same latitude of the famous Atlantic resorts Bayonne and Biarritz in France, on a large, flat and high terrace on the north-western most curve of the bay, which juts some 7km inland. Apart from being a beach resort, Varna rivals the great cities of Sofia and Plovdiv, in offering cultural attractions and historical buildings, museums and art galleries. It also provides access to some of the quieter scenic spots along the coast, including the nature reserve of Kamchiya, the royal palace of Balchik and the hillside monastery of Aladzha.
