Article 5 – House Hunting Holiday in Berlin

After the tumult of the 20th Century, Berlin has recovered since the fall of the Berlin Wall to once again become a cosmopolitan metropolis to rival Paris, London and New York. For those looking for a holiday home that offers more than lounging on a beach, Berlin is a city steeped in culture, both old and new. With the opportunity to buy at extremely attractive prices, with the potential for an excellent return on this investment, why not check out this historic city with a house hunting holiday? Here are just a few of the attractions of Berlin…

Architecture
There is a wide variety of architecture in Berlin, a legacy of the different governments that have controlled the city from the late 19th Century through the 20th Century, with the division and then the re-unification of Berlin. Berlin boasts the second highest building in Europe, the Fernsehturm, at 368m in height. This is a good place to start in your reconnaissance of the city as the 204m viewing gallery affords excellent views across Berlin.

The historic East Side Gallery is a must see, a remnant of the Berlin Wall which divided the city between East and West, which now hosts art painted directly on to the Wall. In contrast is the Gendarmenmarkt, a square that is a legacy of Napoleonic invasion, which hosts the architecturally balanced pairing of the Memorial Church, which is faced and complemented by the modern design classic, the Konzerthaus.

Culture & Nightlife
Berlin is famous both as a cultural centre and for its vibrant nightlife. Berlin hosts 153 museums, and about 420 art galleries. In turn, Berlin continues to attract artists from across Europe and beyond. Since 2005, Berlin has held the accolade of UNESCO City of Design.

Following the unification of Germany, the 1990’s saw the rapid development of underground clubbing and nightlife in Berlin, particularly centred around the former East Berlin centre of Mitte. The legacy of this underground cultural explosion is a profusion of trendy clubs in modern day Berlin – and the city is of course world famous for the annual techno festival, The Love Parade. The Mitte area was largely renovated following reunification, and is to this day the site of many bargain property investments.

Holiday Accommodation
I found plenty of hotels on the Travelzoo website that can accommodate you for holidays in Berlin. As with any City break, ensure piece of mind as you go about your house hunting, and get decent travel insurance from the likes of AA.
