Property for sale in le marche Italy - Le marche property

Back to Italy Home

Le Marche is a beautiful unspoiled region, fast becoming one of the most popular tourist areas of Italy.

Marche occupies a narrow strip between the Apennines and the Adriatic – some would say it is Italy’s best-kept secret. There are hundreds of places to explore but the best known are: Urbino, with its spectacular Renaissance palace and home of the painter, Raphael; Macerata, as fetching as any Tuscan or Umbrian hill town but minus the crowds; Ascoli Piceno, which allegedly owes its existence to a woodpecker that led a group of nomadic shepherds to settle there; Jesi, known as “the little Milan of the north” and celebrated for its Renaissance and Baroque palaces, most notably the Palazzo Pianetti; the pilgrimage site of Loreto; and the small spa town of Sarnano.

The pace is slow here, the people friendly and the scenery is magnificent, with wonderful walking possibilities in the Monti Sibellini. There are elegant “palazzi” as well as attractive white stone farmhouses and cottages, frequently in need of renovation and sometimes hard to access. Fish stew (brodetto di pesci), using different fish in tomato sauce, is served all along the coast. Inland, the traditional first course is “vincigrassi”, a rich lasagne which is best washed down with local wines such as Rosso del Cornero or Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi.
