Beyond Lisbon, the nation’s capital city, is the region known as Oeste (west) on the Silver Coast (Costa de Prata). Green and undulating inland, its coast is dramatic cliffs in places and sandy beaches in others. Here, the Atlantic Ocean swells and rolls, seducing surfers to ride its crashing waves.

It its scenery is not so well known yet to foreign eyes, the produce that grows in its fertile earth will be familiar. Rocha pears are indigenous; wine from Estremadura and Ribatejo (Oeste’s two regions) is produced in a greater volume than anywhere else in Europe, testimony to the sun and rain that fall in equal measures to produce ideal wine-growing conditions.
