Murcia Property - Property for Sale Murcia Spain
Back to Spanish Property Home Page View property for sale in Murcia The region of Murcia lies to the south of Valencia and is thinly populated except in the areas around the rivers. The mountains reach right down to the sea.
Murcia has one of the least visited stretches of Spanish coastline. Known as the Costa Calida, “the warm coast”, it has 155 miles of beaches stretching between its boundaries with Almeria and Alicante. Local authorities have resisted the demands of mass tourism to ensure their seafronts remain unspoilt. Another bonus is the northern Mar Menor, a vast natural lagoon where the water is slightly warmer than the Mediterranean and has therapeutic properties. It is an ideal spot for swimming and other watersports. Here the strip of land known as La Manga divides the lagoon from the Mediterranean.
Property in MurciaUntil recently, Murcia was a little-known region for British house-hunters, However, times are changing. There are newly built motorways and marinas, golf courses and housing developments, with more at the planning stage. Murcia and its Costa Calida remains relatively cheap compared to neighbouring regions and is relatively unspoilt.
Property-wise and topographically, the Costa Calida is divided by Cartagena, the region’s second city. To the north, the coast is considerably more developed, particularly round the Mar Menor. To the south of Cartagena, there is a scarcity of property for sale or land to build on between the resorts of Mazarron and Aguilas. A typical traditional country dwelling, in need or some minor work, if often a one-storey house, with thick whitewashed walls, a red/orange or mottled yellow tiled roof, and pale terracotta floor tiles. There might be a bread oven outside and a large fireplace in the living room where the cooking was done. Installing a new bathroom and kitchen is usually the first priority for new owners and perhaps rearranging rooms so that the second and third bedrooms are not reached through the first. There are village and townhouses, some of which appear quite small and in need of a lick of paint on the outside, but smart and spacious inside with lots of rooms leading off the main living room. Large seventeenth to nineteenth century town mansion houses, or casas senoriales, with wrought-iron balconies and family coats of arms, are also found. Some are enormous with over 25 rooms, and are major renovation projects, perhaps for someone with a business in mind. Good-sized cortijos with vineyards attached to them can also be tracked down. CartagenaCartagena is going through a massive renaissance. Two major shopping and entertainment complexes are well under construction; major investment in the restoration of its archaeological treasures and historic quarters, all ensure that Cartagena is fast becoming one of Spain’s most memorable cities. With the coast close by, a neighbouring bird sanctuary and countless nature trails through the area’s stunning mountain scenery, the area surrounding the city is becoming increasingly popular with property buyers.
